A jointer is a woodworking machine used to flatten and straighten the faces and edges of boards. It features a rotating cutterhead that shaves off excess material, creating smooth and even surfaces for accurate woodworking. The jointer can be essential for preparing wood before further processing in other tools.

Safety Precautions

Machine Inspection Before operation, inspect the jointer for any damage or malfunction. Do not use the jointer if there are any issues; report them to maintenance immediately.

Workspace Organization Maintain a clean and clutter-free workspace to prevent tripping hazards. Ensure the floor is free of sawdust and debris to prevent slipping.

Machine Inspection Check the wood stock for defects, foreign objects, or nails before running it through the jointer.

Adjustment and Setup Follow the manufacturer's guidelines for proper setup and adjustment of the jointer. Make adjustments only when the jointer is turned off and unplugged.

Safe Starting and Stopping Ensure the jointer is turned off before making any adjustments. Wait for the jointer to reach full speed before feeding the material. After completing the cut, wait for the cutterhead to come to a complete stop before removing the material.

Feed Direction Always feed the material against the rotation of the cutterhead to prevent kickback. Use of Push

Blocks and Push Sticks Use appropriate push blocks or push sticks to guide the material through the jointer, keeping hands a safe distance from the cutterhead.

Avoid Overloading Do not force the material through the jointer; let the machine cut at its own pace.

Emergency Stop Familiarize yourself with the location and operation of the emergency stop button. Stop the jointer immediately in case of any emergency.

Maintenance Regularly clean the jointer to prevent the buildup of dust and debris. Keep the blades sharp and properly aligned. Follow the manufacturer's maintenance schedule for lubrication and other routine tasks.

Training Ensure that you are adequately trained on the safe use of the jointer.

Emergency Procedures Know the location of first aid supplies and emergency exits. In case of injury or emergency, seek help immediately. Adhering to these safety precautions will help create a safer working environment when operating a woodworking jointer. Always prioritize safety and exercise caution when working with power tools

Safety Equipment Required

Eye Protection Always wear CSA approved safety glasses or a face shield to protect your eyes from flying wood chips and debris.

Hearing Protection Use earplugs or earmuffs to minimize the impact of loud noise generated by the jointer.

Dust Mask/Respirator: Wear a dust mask or respirator to prevent inhalation of wood dust.

Workshop Apparel: Avoid loose clothing, jewelry, or anything that could get caught in the machine.

I tried using the jointer yesterday but it chewed up my wood (maple). I don\'t know how to inspect the blades, can the machine be checked? Thanks, David Foell
